Father and Son

Ada’s hand is around the Albie’s. His face is open, light, freckles like brown crumbs. The sun punches its way through the clouds and turns the ground into a chess board, and we are the pieces, moving between shadowed squares. Ada is talking about the shop, about Mr Vincent, his behaviour.

‘Is something bothering him? He seems very jumpy.’

‘He’s fine.’

‘You really think so? It’s like he’s scared in his own shop.’ Her eyes are sharp, there is darkness where darkness shouldn’t be.

‘He’s fine.’

‘Hmm.’ A wrinkle between her brows. I reach out, touch it, and it flattens. She gasps. ‘What are you doing?

‘Getting a bug. Wrinkly little thing.’

She breathes and smiles. ‘Oh. Thanks.’

‘You seem a bit on edge?’

‘I am.’

‘Why?’

She looks at me, looks into me. For something. What something? ‘I’m not really sure. Just a weird feeling at the minute.’

‘Odd.’

She is looking all over my face now, for a way to get in. ‘Odd,’ she agrees.
